Looking for examples using Hooks

Well, I am wondering if you can possibly provide some examples of hooks that you may use in your CI application.

I've been looking into making my own, but trying to find out what would qualify as a correct reason to use a hook. I've seen a very small analytical example (which seemed more for timing pages) and I've seen another one, but I can't remember what it was at this time.

Anyways, I'm just looking at real-case correct usage of hooks in a CI application. I'm sure I could just randomly create things, but no point doing things the wrong way

Also, if you're doing things per controllers, why would I want to make a hook, and not do something in a MY_Controller file?
