Is there much difference between 1.3 and 2.1?

I'm wondering if there's much functional difference between 1.3 and 2.1.

Because I see things in the user guide, like http://ellislab.com/codeigniter/user-gui...rence.html which says it's "Codeigniter version 1.3 quick reference chart". Is it still relevant?

I also see that the tutorial are grouped by <=1.7 and =>2.0.0 - but didn't I remember reading that 2.1 had some major changed from 2.0.1?

In other words, as a newbie, is the 1.3 quick ref and any =>2.0.0 tutorial going to be "safe" to follow?

The chart is incorrect and out of date. There has been numerous fixes and improvements in the 6 or so years between 1.3 and 2.1 were released. There is no reason at all why you should still be using 1.3.

Anything below 2.0 is wildly out of date and potentially insecure.

There are so many tutorials for 1.7.x because it was available for two years.

2.1 is mainly bug fixes and new features, so most tutorials are still perfectly relevant.

Suffice it to say that we don't release new versions for a chuckle. If you are using any software that's more than 4 years out of date you need to upgrade.

I didn't say I was using 1.3, I asked if the chart titled "Codeigniter version 1.3 quick reference chart" in the 2.1 user guide was relevant. You've clarified by saying it's "incorrect and out of date".

Quite. I'm using version 2.1, I'm following the 2.1 guide. The question, which I can't think of a better way of making any clearer was: Is a chart called "Codeigniter version 1.3 quick reference chart" still relevant.

I'm guessing it's not, I've got someone telling me it's not, "the man himself" has seen this thread, but 3 weeks later, the 1.3 chart is still in the 2.1 docs.

See why I'm confused?

I can't find a link to that page in the user guide (I did a search for 'quick_reference' on the source of the http://ellislab.com/codeigniter/user-guide/toc.html page). I can only access it by directly going to it from the link you provided. So, it appears it's not actually part of the current userguide unless you know of a link to it?

Only quick reference chart I see is for 1.7 not 1.3

Indeed, although given that Phil Sturgeon said above
"Anything below 2.0 is wildly out of date"
again, should I be relying on that?

Quick question: Why would you be searching the source? On the top right of every page is a box marked "Search User Guide". This would be my preferred method for searching the user guide.

I think there's possibly a language barrier here, so, third time lucky, let's try pictures:

Edit: Ah, file upload doesn't work (even though "attach files is right below) and there's no img code, so here goes:

The search result page http://goo.gl/LIvDO
The page it links to with the 1.3 guide: http://goo.gl/bFqt8

Hope this helps.

Because the actual link might be different than the text that the search will turn up. So I was using the link you provided and didn't find it. Who cares if you can find it in a search...I find lots of outdated info in searches. It doesn't show up in the actual TOC of the docs, so I wouldn't consider it a part of the docs.

Really? You wouldn't consider a document, found as the first result by the search function available from that documentation titled "Search User Guide", headed "CodeIgniter User Guide Version 2.1.0", to be part of the Codeigniter documentation? Extraordinary.

I'd be interested to see if anyone actually from Codeigniter would agree???
(I certainly hope your philosophy doesn't extend far round the web otherwise we're all in trouble Smile

Kind of like having to ask if there is much difference between 1.3 that was released 6 years ago and current version.
