I got the simpletester trunk from svn and it's still working all right for me for the model level. However, for the controller level, I switched to phpunit firing off selenium, because simpletester's browser approach really only works if you aren't using any javascript at all. I think browser simulations with accurate javascript emulators are a real next-generation thing, so using selenium (which actually launches your browser and takes it over to test clickpaths) is the best compromise out there.
