CodeIgniter for developing a platform/API

Anyone have any experience using CodeIgniter to develop a Platform/API?
I don't want to use the worst example, but I am looking to do a very basic version of something like Facebook logins. Once logged into our third party service, the user will get more access to the site they are currently on. They will also be able to directly access the third party site and access records and tools relating to their user account.

The rest of the sites and applications have been developed in CodeIgniter, but I am debating two things:
Quote:a) Is it better to separate the third party application from the "API" system or make them the same?

b) Is it best to use CodeIgniter for this type of project or is there a better way to do the API in PHP that would just make more sense?

Any advice or thoughts are appreciated. I have extensive CI experience, but this is my first stab at doing anything in Crossdomain / API territory.
