I don't even use active record for queries like this, if my application doesn't need to support multiple types of DBs. If it's an app that only I manage and the environment never changes, AR is completely optional.

Hi Aken, yes in retrospect AR holds me back from doing what I need to in most cases, when I first started working with CI though it was a boon!
