I am interesting in knowing why through all these iterations, the language directories are still using full English spellings. Why has there not been a move to IETF language tags as directory names?

I don't see any immediate advantage to the current method, since dialects become increasingly difficult to track with a long string system, and you are required to maintain an RFC 4647 conversion table if you are using browser hinting for language selection.

I am not an avid contributor to this repo, so I'm not certain the best location to bring up this topic, but I would not mind making a merge request if there are no objections to the change.

That change would break people's apps if they upgraded, and CodeIgniter tries to remain as backwards-compatible as possible.

However - you make a totally valid point, and I see no reason why that shouldn't implemented, other than the fact it would mean you can't make up your own languages. Ion Auth for example, has a pirate language.

Granted, not many people would need to come up with their own language, but it's nice to have the option to. Smile
