Refreshing URIs without refreshing the page: It's possible?

Hi, I'm speaking from the ignorance, but, it's possible to refresh the URI that the user sees in the browser without having to actually refreshing or loading the page?

I'm looking to build a site with Ajax, that charges all the content in a div, but I want to know if it's possible to change the URL that the user sees at his navigation bar of the browser at the same time.

Any idea? or that's impossible?
