Choosing a server is not always up to you - it could be management that makes the decision or client already has hosting somewhere and they do not want to change it just because some web guy says they have to.
However, you can use PHP 5.3+ features for your own CodeIgniter projects when you know you have server for it.
Inflexibility and missing features is something that gets thrown around a lot, but for some reason no-one actually says what these things are.
Maybe share a light on issues that you could not solve with CodeIgniter that you can with another unnamed framework?
