Animated gif to jpg = multiple jpg files

I created an image upload system a while ago, fundamentally based on the CI docs. I created some resizing and cropping functionality etc. All works nice but I've just noticed that when uploading an animated gif my system fails because CI is creating a jpg image for each frame of the gif, and adding a number on the end of my naming convention which makes them invisible to my image system and therefore they become orphaned. Anyone know what's going on there or how to stop the extra files/renaming?
