I understand. We have been designing and developing websites for over 20 years and we have been in similar situations before.
We were contracted to move the site from the current provider due to recent support issues. Once we started getting into it, we quickly came to the conclusion that there were deeper [programming] problems that are not easily corrected.
We never used Codeigniter and we were only interested in a temporary move away from the current provider in order to make time to create a development plan to move forward. When you were taking us deeper into the coding of this site, we realize there is a direct connection to ExpressionEngine which a lot of the code was authored ExpressionEngine is a powerful CMS, but there are simpler and more widely supported CMSs that do a super great job while being easy to modify.
Our plan was always to move this site to WordPress. We are going to contact our client today and make this suggestion.
