You can start playing around with it and testing it at any time. I wouldn't use it in a production site until it reaches the full release, though.

This has been asked a number of times, and the answer hasn't changed ... we expect it to be released in 2017.
You can "play" with it right now, but it is not "production-ready" or feature-complete.

Hi. CodeIgniter 4 will be released in 2017 if everything goes well. It is in the pre-alpha stage. If you want to play with it and see the future of our favorite PHP framework, you can. But do not use it in the production now please, because it is not ready yet. CodeIgniter 3 will be supported for years from now I think.
