scanning documents with CI or third party DLL

hi all,
I need to create a button in a php application that will start my scanner (maybe using the standard twain drivers?) and scan whatever is on the scanner, placing the results in my DB.
can I scan documents using web application on my localhost with help of PHP & CI, or even a third party, i did read something about a webscan DLL, a while back?

Any input would be great
