What is it?

Well
gz_asset_helper is a helper designed to provide a method of serving assets (e.g. js, png, jpg, css etc...) as well as providing gzip (php:zlib where available) compression and caching of assets.

It is nicely wrapped up in a class and can be used with codeigniter or OUTSIDE of the codeigniter framework.
