Extending the database class?

Hi,

Is there anyway I can extend the database class and add my own methods to it? Basically I'm used to my own database class which had some custom methods that I like to use. Previously I just hacked the system/database/drivers/mysql/mysql_result.php file, but I've upgraded to the latest version now and I'd rather not hack the core again. Is there any other way to do this?
