Problem with file uploads and latin characters

Hello all...

I always have problems with images upload and latin characters...
I'm brazilian, we have words like terça-feira, maçã, manacá, etc, etc...
And I dont know how to replace those chars by terca-feira, maca, manaca ..........

Anyone knows?
