I thought that I saw a "Site down for maintenance" switch in one of the config files. However, I have tried to find it again without success.. Any pointers or am I dreaming?

Well it's not located in the system/application/config folder.

I found it in Freakauth_light config around line 40....The message that I alluded to is in the language file..

Right, in FAL's config you'll find

When false, the _init() function in the main lib shows this message in the content/turned_off template.
