Problem with Sessions and IE6/Word

Stupid IE6!!!! Why can't it just die???

Anyway - I've come across the weirdest problem. It's not CI related, but I'm hoping there's some guru here who has knowledge of this problem:

- A user is logged in and I'm running a server side session
- User clicks on Word (.doc) link
- IE6 asks 'Open' or 'Save'
- User clicks 'Open'
- Word doc opens in IE, same window
- User reads word doc, clicks 'Back' button
- Rather than going back to the page, the Session terminates and throws the user out ending up at the login page again.

Now - I know 'why' the .doc opens in IE. It's that pref you set in 'Windows Explorer'. Unchecking 'Open in same browser window' for the .doc filetype will actually open the file in Word and everything is hunky-dory. Therefore it works great with NON IE browsers also.

However - even with the option checked - it works just fine in IE7. Clicking the back button takes the user back to the page as expected. Not logout or terminated sessions. It's liek IE6 doesn't do Cookies right when this option is checked.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Is there a way to force an IE6 behavior that fixes this?
I really need some input on this. The app lets reviewers rate the word documents content. There's thousands of them. And users are going bonkers over it. Telling them to download FF or upgrade to IE7 isn't always the best answer either. So I'm hoping there's a remedy.

Help me ObiWan. You're my last hope for sanity....
