New to CI - some beginner questions

As a relative newcomer to OOP as well 2 books that really brought it home for me were:

Object-Oriented PHP: Concepts, Techniques, and Code (a large part of which can be read at Google books and the code can be downloaded from the book's site)
and
PHP 5 Objects, Patterns, and Practice which is a bit more theoretical than the previous one but recommended nonetheless. You can download the code from the book at this site as well.
