Stupid question I know, but just to be certain, are you sure you have cookies enabled in your browser? It's almost as if the data's not set because there's no cookie. At the very least you should have a session cookie, regardless of content. Also, please check that your logout function is not being called inadvertently. I know you've probably checked this already, but I've had problems before where the solution had me kicking myself.
