ftp chmod and chmod

So I have a directory, I check if it exists and it does.

I try to change permissions with ftp and I get a file or directory doesn't exist error, but the path is correct.


If I just use php's chmod I get Operation not permitted.


I transfered a site from one host to another, and wannamake sure directories that are existing have the correct permisionsrather than manually doing it.
