Atom is based on REST. It's just defines a set of resources for publishing, and Atom resources are just the representations of underlying resources. I don't think REST is old. In fact it seems quite the contrary, bigger services are just now starting to use it effectively. S3 is an example, also google's GData is a Attom model for RESTful services.
