Default controller 404 error with index.php?

Hi, I get a 404 Page Not Found when I visit http://www.mysite.com/ but if I visit http://www.mysite.com/index.php?/home then it loads correctly.
I have to use index.php? because of the host I am with.

My CI version is v1.7.2

Config setup
$config['index_page'] = "index.php?";

$config['uri_protocol'] = "AUTO";

I have tried other than AUTO but same issue.
