And it's just hideous from a semantics and usability standpoint.

Never, ever, use JavaScript attributes - always develop without JS first. Once everything works - go back and inject and override to implement your JS functionality.

Now you have the prettiness for the users with JS, the usability for the non-JS, and easily maintainable code.
