My problem was the other way around and I was using the php function mysql_insert_id(). This worked fine locally but when I put the site live it still inserted the data but always returned an id of 0 as the last insert.

I am now using the CI function $this->db->insert_id() which works a treat. Odd it worked locally but at least I'm up and running now.
