No thead in HTML Table class?

Am I missing something or does the HTML table class wrap table heading cells (<th>) inside the <tbody> tag? Why isn't there a <thead> tag for them to go in?

I found a custom HTML table extension in the wiki called MY_Table.php that is supposed to generate a proper HTML table with thead & tfoot, but I couldn't get it to work.
