Renaming index.php

I wanted to rename index.php for SEO purposes and so changed the file name (but not location) and then set the config['index'] value to newName.

But no luck - I can't think what else I would need to change?

BTW. There is no active .htaccess in the directory.

I did play with config['uri_protocol'] but no change.
