version control and development

We have a website going live soon and I was just curious how you guys are handling source code versioning. We will have a live server. My thought was to provision another server with a subdomain to act a development server to test changes. I'm currently the only developer, but we will add more. So I thought about adding git to the development machine and then put the code to the development box for everyone to really test in a similar environment as the production server.

Does this sound reasonable? or this there a better way to do it?
