Maybe next time ask fist the employeer what framework they wanted?
And find an employer  that's looking for a CI guy.

But using both CI and Laravel is hard to master simultaneously.

It's not being used any longer. You have job offers for Synfony, then Laravel, then Drupal, who uses Synfony components. For CI it's pretty close to nil.
