Damn, that's a shame. Specific to CI3 - do you think it will be made compatible with PHP 8? I'm not too concerned until November 2022 which is when support for PHP 7.4 is dropped. But after that time I'd like to think our CI projects will still work. I'm going to make a pull request for the above fix, and if there's anything else I can contribute, I will do.
