I have always got the impression that CodeIgniter has always been a secondary product for the guys at EllisLabs. Something they build along side or after they release ExpressionEngine.

I would say that CI2.0 would probably be released soon. Maybe by the end of the year as it is already fairly complete. It just looks like it needs someone to get their head down on it and finish it off.

If anything though 2.1 is the real milestone to look forward to. This is when PHP4 will be dropped.

yeah JasonS i think they must give it a push, they don't even update the site design, give news (except the urgent one)
please EllisLabs give CI some importance. but i need to build a new project and it's important to me to use a stable release and i think CI 2.0 is better than using the 1.7 then upgrading after a few days , don't you think so ?

I just wonder why it has to have a certain "label" for it to be used by everyone.

Lots of open source product are under continuous development. Sticking a label on it doesn't mean it's bug free. For some (look at Kohana), a version label doesn't mean anything, it's even something to fear, due to incompatibilities with previous versions.
CI is a very stable product, and it has to be otherwise it would break Ellislab's commercial products. Which for us developers is a plus, you can rely on it, and you don't have to go back to modify all your apps when a new version of the framework is released.

I'm using 2.0 for a long time now, without a single glitch.

Honestly, I quite like the CI site design. I am not tired of it yet. I also appreciate the lack of news. Many sites have way too much news and you spend just as much time sifting through the crap as you do reading important information.

If your project is going to take a few months then I would get started on CI2.0. You can keep updating it and by the time your project is done, I am sure it will be done. There are a number of structural difference's between CI1.7 and 2. It's far similar to write an application once instead of twice.

Yup, doing it for months now. I keep track of the changes on bitbucket, and if needed I sync my local repo with CI's.

Just to share my point of view:
I have my own CMS powered by CodeIgniter 1.7 but it is relying on some libraries like HMVC and other workarounds like using CodeIgniter and other 3rd-party open-source projects and stuff like that. I know that HMVC has an update for the new version but I am thinking something else: though I haven't looked at the code yet I imagine that there are really big modifications to the core from version 1.7 to 2.0. As I know in 2.1 PHP4 is out. I imagine there will be more dramatic changes in 2.1
So I want to know if 2.1 is coming out in the near half an year, as I am not very sure how long it will take for me to update my code to be using 2.0 and then 2.1. If the distance between 2.0 and 2.1 is too short I would wait for 2.1 and make the changes in my code just once. Perhaps I am to lazy here but what do you think ?
