Authentication (ACL) - Challenges - Solutions - Dilemmas |
[eluser]Randy Casburn[/eluser]
Dear Community, [ EDIT -- This post has been edited since the original post ] [ a summary of key points is below ] In this lively topic: Most Important Library: ACL an overwhelming 67.5% of those who voted established a need for a standardized security control system within CodeIgniter. I break the "security control system" into three appropriate parts: 1) Authentication 2) Role Based Access Control 3) Identity Management and Control My software is compartmentalized that way too. The Challenge: In post #43, Derek Jones stated Quote:Nothing about writing nor supporting (especially not supporting) an ACL solution is easy, quick, or cheap.and then proceeded to issued a challenge for someone to "put up" (my words - not his). The Dilemma: I can't afford to do this work and support it for free. The fact is I am one person consultancy / software house and I consult, travel, write code, teach, etc. But if enough (market) interest is generated, I am willing to put my company behind a broader effort. If that happens, it means the product gets supported. The Solution: Obviously a commercial solution: Plurious Auth is the Authentication part. Plurious Auth is very simple, extensible, flexible, and it just works. You're welcome to go check it out. ============== Summary of key points On behalf of the community The use of the NuSphere PhpExpress extension makes the solution too restrictive The developers I'm selling too expect to be able to modify all code they use Support provided to overseas locations may take too much time I personally...am a little nuts :-) On behalf of Plurious Plurious wishes to maintain a Class A product with Class A support Plurious wishes to control a software baseline from which all support is derived Plurious wishes to extend additional capabilities from the existing baseline and not a moving target! Plurious will not support dishonorable people Randy

Uhm Randy the plurious site is kind of slow for me without an apparent reason, 8 seconds loading time according to the figures at the bottom of the page, and when i back buttoned to get to the CI forum i got a popup saying the xml data couldn't be retrieved. Just given you a heads up.

It's quite easy to just drop the Zend ACL into a CI app - http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/zend.acl.html I'll try and write up some instructions at some point

We released a full membership manager and user administration software just days ago. All built on codeigniter, with ACL and all that stuff. Most of all, we're giving it open source with public SVN, code documentation, mailing lists, forum support. For anyone interested...it's in my sig.

Think of it this way. For a company using CI commercially, what is the investment time and expense wise to do what you are saying...vs the alternative. [Edit] Besides, isn't that sort of the whole point... [quote author="GSV Sleeper Service" date="1222263454"] I'll try and write up some instructions at some point[/quote] Yes there are lots of other solutions. Please don't post those instructions here. Make another thread. Don't hijack this one. Thanks, Randy

Please don't hi-jack this thread for your own wares. Randy

If you've looked at my site, you've seen how much work I've put into 'getting around to it'. The whole point of this thread was to discuss something I've put a lot of time and energy into. I would like to keep it focused on that topic. Randy |
