default select and radio when pre-populating forms

Hi I have just upgraded to 1.7.2 and am loving how the radio and select default options seem to work now.

However I have a form I am prepopulating with a users details. set_value() works well for the text input's but when it comes to select and radio pre-population I am a little stumped.

Is this possible without writing my own function?
