Template Parser, Variable Pair depth, Greedy Replacements

How many levels of variable pairs does the template parser support?
Is the search and replace function greedy?

Edit: As far as I can tell, it can handle at least 2 levels of variable pairs.
It does not seem greedy, i.e. it will search for more than one of the same variable pair.

There's a good extension somewhere in the forum allowing the same namepairs and depths, or at least thats what I remember, might be wrong though.
