1.7.2 security patch -> 1.7.1 affected as well?

curious if this 1.7.2 security issue that is fixed by yesterday's patch would also affect 1.7.1?

Yes, and though we do not maintain older version, in the case 1.7.1 the standalone patch will suffice.
