.htaccess help

I'm a complete newbie to CodeIgniter and have never been great working with .htaccess files so I was hoping someone could give me some guidance on how to do the following.

I would like to display the following:

http://www.site.com/controller/function/var1/

as

http://www.site.com/var1/controller/function/


Any help is much appreciated
