If you don't have experience with making forum software, I'd suggest watching these series.
Seem pretty fair and straight forward. Than you can start converting it to CodeIgniter.

Thanks for that but at the moment gone back to open cart frame work its the only php frame work I know I can make stuff with.

In regards to the forum. I might just use phpbb or something like that and just style it. I am more a designer rather than programmer though. Think best stick to designing
