If you upgrade to PHP 7, mysql_query() will not work, and that has nothing to do with CodeIgniter. CodeIgniter developers (and even most general PHP developers) should not have been using mysql_query(), anyway.

This extension was deprecated in PHP 5.5.0, and it was removed in PHP 7.0.0. Instead, the MySQLi or PDO_MySQL extension should be used. What did you Try? What did you Get? What did you Expect?
