Yet another license question |

Hi! I’ve read a lot of topics discussing the CI license and I have to admit that I don’t understand it in full despite Derek’s and other people’s efforts explaining it (more than once). My question is: Can I use CI for the development of proprietary applications or are applications built using the CI framework automatically open source? I think of GPL in comparison to Lesser GPL or MIT. I have been using CakePHP for a while but am not quite happy with it and would now like to switch to CI. I understand that the CI license is permissive but how permissive is it? The license issue is important to me. Can someone please explain this to me? Thanks in advance.

As long as you abide by the license, then you can sell, share, re-purpose, do whatever you want with anything you build in CI. What you build does not have to be open source. The license has 6 bullets. If you can go down the list and say "yes, I follow that" to each of the 6, then you're good to go.

Thank you very much for your quick reply. It’s all clear to me now and of course I do say yes to all six bullets in the licence. Also thanks for welcoming me to CI.

Found it... http://ellislab.com/codeigniter/user-guide/license.html So, If I build a site that charges for an online service, or a shopping cart, or something like that, what do I need to do? I am not redistributing CI, just using it for my website. Thank you,

Go crazy, Nexus! Only if you are redistributing the files in some manner do any of the restrictions apply, outside of not infringing on our trademarked names. We certainly appreciate when sites acknowledge that they are built on our framework, but it's not a requirement. Definitely submit your completed project to the projects list though if you want to be in our link list.

Sorry for bringing this topic back, but I have a question on this too. I'm starting to develop an open source web application using CI, and I'd like to give away the source to with little or no restrictions on use. For example, the nature of the application means that I'd have to allow commercial use. Am I correct in thinking that, provided I include a copy of the CodeIgniter license with the source and I ensure that credit to CI is given, I'm ok to distribute it however I wish?
