CodeIgniter 3.0 Release Candidate |
Happy that 3 is nearly out of the door.
Quicker you guys can release it fully, the quicker you guys can start working on 4.
Yaaay! Thought CI fell in the forgotten darkness (though I made a lot of sites with it).
Was going to use Laravel to start a new project today, but I'll do it with this new RC Good job, and thanks for dev's team effort.
Hi!
When can we expect a stable version? I'm asking, because I have a big project coming up and I'm wondering if I should create my app based on current stable version or should I try to delay the project so I can use a stable version 3.0? Or maybe even go with a RC? Thanks
I was very excited to hear about the release of CI3.0R RC! Glade to know CI hasn't left to die!
good stuff guys. Now i can update my CI from Dev version.

I'm sure you guys had lengthy discussions about this somewhere, but I'll throw in my 2c.
The upgrade path from 2.2 seems like too much. I would have really liked to see a much easier upgrade path with a lot of old features flagged as depreciated. The large amount of changes I would need to make to upgrade an app to 3 turns me off from upgrading an app. With it being so long since any substantial changes, I assume most developers are in the same boat as me and have started using other frameworks such as Laravel for new apps. I know Laravel is great, has a lot more features that I want, and has a steady team working on it. With CI 3 still missing a lot of features and having a completely new team, CI 3 is not something I will want to blindly start using for new projects. A large barrier to using it on my already existing CI apps is only going to make me just forget CI ever exists. You need to focus on winning people back to CI and your team. Instead it feels like as someone who enjoyed CI in the past, I'm just being completely ignored. It seems to me that you just saw a lot of content on the upgrading page and didn't even try to read it. It may seem a lot, but unless you're using virtually all of the framework's functions, a large portion of it doesn't relate to your application at all. Half of that content is about removing previously deprecated functionality and deprecating some more. There are of course other breaking changes, but there's hardly any way around them if we want to release an improved product. Most, if not all of them were called for with numerous bug reports. Everybody is entitled to their opinion of course, but complaints about a long upgrade path is the last thing we expected. After all, an often recurring complaint is that CodeIgniter is supposedly living in the past and can't survive without a dramatic change. Backwards-compatibility is a big deal for CI and saying that you're being ignored in that regard is ... to be polite - unfair. Then again, you could be just another Laravel fanboy who came to CodeIgniter's forums only to say you've "moved on to better", but your writings seem smarter than that, even if you didn't check your facts. I guess people just like to complain.
