Supporting Japanese Text

I am having a problem here, i know right.

Anyway, I have my DB and tables set for utf8_unicode_ci and configured the db config for utf8_unicode_ci.

However, for some reason I am still getting

# あける
# おしえる
# おりる
# かりる
# しめる
# つける

instead of Japanese characters. I can see the kana just fine in phpmyadmin when browsing the data, but it won't display in the browser through CI.

Any help would be great.

I got it. I totally forgot to set content type in the head. I just added the following and it worked.

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" />
