With respect to refering to an external javascript, is there any reason why use of .js is better than the .txt when both seem to work?

You could name it .exe if you wanted - you use .js because that is the standard.

Same principle with your home computer - sure, you could name all of your text files .exe, .bat, .pdf, or .omfgendoftheworld - but why?
