My first post here and my first CI project.
I had been scouring the forums looking for a solution to a very similar problem. My localhost development was fine and then as soon as moved to my live development server I got the same "unable to connect" message (the new location was a subfolder of an add-on domain).
All connection details were correct as I was able to connect using myPHPAdmin. It was proving very frustrating.
Following the ideas in this thread I changed the pconnect setting to FALSE and bingo! Sweet as a nut! Thank you
