need help decideing on an approach to updateing fields in a table.

Hello all,
I finished the section of adding data to a table in a database. My next step is to update the data if need be. I'm trying accomplish this with less coding steps while using less resources.

Would it be a waist of time checking to see if the data already exists and just submit the changed data? Or should I just update the table regardless if the data in the form fields are the same in the database table?
