Error reporting(0) not stopping error messages

Why do I still get this when error reporting is set to 0?

Code:

A Database Error Occurred

Error Number: 1064

You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 3

SELECT COUNT(*) AS `numrows` FROM (`products`) WHERE `datenew` >=

Surely these messages should be hidden from the user.

Becuase it's a MySQL error not a PHP error! Fix your MySQL errors simple!
