search priority

a client would like to control search results by adding a "search priorities" field.
consider a dropdown of 1-10. and each entry gets a value.
search results then should consider first this priority field and then perform the query.
does that make sense and is it remotely possible?

What is the search acting on? e.g. Will it drive a MySQL query to find results, or some other form of search?

we have nothing but the default search at the moment. sounds like you'd expect a custom search to start with. there's no "hook" or anything to modify the default search query, right?
