Two things:

1) Depending on how CI 4 turns out, there may not be a Community Auth for CI 4. I haven't been following along with CI 4 development, but  I'm satisfied with CI 3 and hope that it is officially supported for a long time, or that somebody takes CI 3 and keeps going with it in some capacity. At this point, the only person that could probably do that well is Narf.

2) The mentioned authentication libraries couldn't be more different, and if for instance ionAuth was the official authentication of CI 4, it'd be a major inconvenience for me. I think that's one of the reasons why it's not going to happen, because no matter what authentication was official, there would always be people that would want something else. You can't please everyone.

I wonder if the maintainers of ionAuth and tankAuth will update for CI4
Codeigniter is simply one of the tools you need to learn to be a successful developer. Always add more tools to your coding arsenal!

I've seen the Ion Auth 3 repo...  but it appears to be abandoned.  The last commit was Apr 6, 2015

https://github.com/IonAuth/IonAuth

Quite honestly, if they don't update Ion Auth (edit: Ion Auth 2 from https://github.com/benedmunds/CodeIgniter-Ion-Auth  sorry for any confusion.), I likely will do it, because I very much enjoy using Ion Auth.  Never played with Tank Auth...

What I got from that was, he thinks the CI dev team should create a 3rd party auth system for CI4....

Because, you know, that's never been asked/answered before either.

Yeah, I knew that.  I was pointing out that Ben (et al) had started creating a composer based Ion Auth but it seemed a dead repo.

Sorry, my bad.  I can see where my comment about updating Ion Auth was confusing, but it was a separate though about updating Ion Auth 2 to CI4  in the repo you pointed to.

Like I mentioned --many third party projects are prone for abandonment. Authentication isn't difficult to implement, but tedious. Most developers use different libraries. Because of this, collaboration is a pain, which causes a lot of missed deadlines. It's very obvious that it's badly needed. The demand is there. Ignoring this would be very bad.
Long live CodeIgniter!
