You can wait. The changes involve rare issues. Unless you're paranoid about security.
Simpler is always better

If your running XAMPP you can just download it, unzip it and copy it into the php folder.
It has nothing to do with CodeIgniter it's just a PHP update. What did you Try? What did you Get? What did you Expect?
